The 411 on the Prophetic, Sandra Lugo
The word "prophecy" comes from the Greek word "propheteia" which means the speaking forth of the mind and counsel of God. Prophecy is not necessarily, nor even primarily, foretelling, it is the declaration of that which cannot be known by natural means. It is the forth telling of the will of God, whether with reference to the past, the present or the future. The purpose is to edify, to comfort, and to encourage believers while its effect upon unbelievers is to show that the secrets of a man's heart are known to God, to convict of sin and to constrain to worship.
Purpose of the Gift of Prophecy:
- Build up the church
- Exhortation
- Encouragement
- Consolation
- Forewarn
- Conviction
- Correction
We cannot allow the misuse and misunderstanding of prophecy to prevent us from embracing it.
"Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies.
Test all things; hold fast what is good." 1 Thessalonians 5:19-22
The prophetic:
1) Reveals the depth of the mind, heart and will of God.
2) Exposes what's in darkness.
